CALGARY – On a day where the September snow was falling throughout parts of the game, the Victoria Vikes got their first win of the season with a 2-0 win against the University of Calgary Dinos.

Vikes captain Stef Langkammer scored in the 69th minute to put the visiting side up 2-0, and the Vikes would hold on from there.

The Vikes now improve to 1-0-2 on the season while the Dinos fall to 0-1-0.

The beginning of the game was very much a feeling out process for both teams, as scoring chances were few and far between. However, the Vikes would find a way through in the 30th minute, as Lindsay Cole would score the first goal of the game off of a penalty corner to put the Vikes up 1-0.

After halftime, the Dinos came out flying, which led to Janelle Rice having the Dinos' best scoring chance of the game from the center of the circle. Rice's attempt was kicked away by Vikes goalkeeper Robin Fleming who had another solid performance, recording her second shutout of the young season.

Dinos defenders Sabrina Wong and Jenna Birch-Jones had very strong performances at the back. The Vikes had a number of penalty corners in the second half that the Dinos defenders would turn away.

Dinos goalkeeper Ingrid Ulrich, who was playing her first game in two years as she was kept out all of last year with an injury, had a very strong outing. Ulrich made a number of key saves, especially in the second half, to keep the Dinos within striking distance.

Vikes defender Anna Mollenhauer (Canada West Women's 3rd star of the week) would keep the momentum from last weekend going, as she was a standout on defense, limiting the Dinos to very few scoring chances.

When asked about his team's performance in their first game of the season, Dinos head coach Peter Taylor believed it was a tale of two halves. "I wasn't overly happy with the first half, I thought we started off a little bit slower than normal. Our second half was much better though. The first fifteen we really showed what we could do."

The teams will do it all over again tomorrow, as the rematch goes Sunday at 11 a.m. on Hawkings Field.
