CALGARY – The Victoria Vikes won the match against the Calgary Dinos with a final score of 1-0 at Hawkings Field on a very windy Sunday afternoon.

In the Canada West league, Dinos fall to 0-4 after their final home match of the year, while the Vikes are 2-1-1.

Vikes' Leina Dueck scored the winning goal of the match once again during the 47th minute through a penalty corner following the swift ball pass from fellow first-year defender Anna Mollenhauer.

The last home game of the season for the Dinos was played diligently with full effort. The match consisted of numerous incidents where the Dinos were very close to scoring a goal.

Dinos' Head Coach Peter Taylor was impressed with his team's effort.

"It was amazing," he said. "Today we deserved more than what we got at, we should have gotten at least a point. The first half was the best so far. This was the best match I've seen in three years of being here. The girls had a lot of energy and passion."

The Dinos had a great opportunity to score during the last few minutes of the game through back-to-back penalty corners. The first resulted in another Vikes foul and a second opportunity, but the ball skipped over the Dinos' stick at the top of the circle just as the final horn sounded. Defender Sabrina Wong efficiently initiated the penalty corner shots with brisk powerful strokes.

During the 14th minute of the match, the Dinos almost scored a goal, however, the ball flew over the left corner of the Vikes net. Forward Danica Heath of the Dinos performed terrifically at her last home game; Heath and midfielder Meghan Norlander worked together across the field passing the ball back and forth in a very close attempt to score this goal.

Second year forward player Sophia Murray of the Vikes went head to head with Norlander in fight for the ball during the 22nd minute of the match on the top left of the field. This resulted in penalty shots provided to both teams in minutes of one another.

At the 34th minute, Vikes' Murray was also nearly successful in scoring a goal into the Dinos net. Due to the outstanding defence tactic of Dinos' team captain Marion Arnott, the ball was quickly rebounded to the opposite end of the field. A couple minutes following that, Arnott performed an outstanding and very powerful penalty shot which made the ball roll deep into the Vikes' half of the field.

The Dinos will next be in Vancouver on the weekend of October 14th to take on the UBC Thunderbirds, the defending U SPORTS champions in a two-game series.
