WOLFPACK DROPS 101 ON THE COUGARS

Calgary, AB – The TRU WolfPack dominated the Mount Royal Cougars winning handily by a score of 101-72, Friday night on Kenyon Court. Josh Wolfram led all scorers with 35 points and 9 rebounds. Brett Layton led all Cougars with his second straight 28-point game.

The Cougars sprinted out to an early 16-9 lead over the WolfPack thanks to some stellar inside work by fifth year veteran James Lefebvre. Second year guard Glen Yang looked very comfortable early on, in an increased role from last season.

As the first quarter wore on, Mount Royal went ice cold and TRU began to find their stroke. The WolfPack scored 14 straight points to take a commanding lead. Derek Wolf finally broke up the run with a deep three to snap the Cougars out of their scoring drought.

Standout rookie Brett Layton drew back into the game to start the second quarter and immediately made an impact. His strong post presence yielded double teams and Layton was able to find his guards on the perimeter. Wolf hit another long jumper to cut into the TRU lead.

Josh Wolfram, the WolfPack's star big man, took over the game late in the second frame. He took a hard jab step and crossed over the Cougars' defender, giving him a lane to the net. Wolfram took one step and put down an emphatic dunk. Layton was not to be outdone, dueling Wolfram in the offensive zone. Layton and the Cougars cut into the WolfPack lead, trailing 43-37 at the half.

Mount Royal got to within two to start the half but once again it was Wolfram who dominated, extending the TRU lead to ten. Both teams went big in the latter stages of the third quarter, playing a much more aggressive inside game. Each time the Cougars tried to mount a comeback, Josh Wolfram took the ball to the basket and nullified the Cougars' momentum.

Down 13 points to start the fourth, Mount Royal had no answer for Wolfram. Every time the Cougars doubled him, he kicked it outside and his teammates knocked down the shot. He even stepped up and nailed a three-pointer of his own to increase the WolfPack's lead to 26. TRU hit two more three-pointers to eclipse the 100-point mark and take the game 101-72.

With the victory, TRU remains perfect with a record of 3-0. Mount Royal falls below .500 dropping to 1-2 in Canada West regular season play.

The Cougars and WolfPack will do it all over again tomorrow night on Kenyon Court. The tip is set for 7:00pm.
