EDMONTON – Following the best calendar month of his CFL career, Winnipeg Blue Bombers linebacker Sam Hurl is the Canada West Alumnus of the Month for August.

A six-year CFL veteran, Hurl recorded 19 defensive tackles for the Bombers in August, as the blue and gold went 4-0 during the month to run their record to 7-2 – good for second in the CFL's West Division heading into Labour Day weekend.

Hurl, who spent the first three seasons of his pro career with the Saskatchewan Roughriders after being selected 12th overall in the 2012 CFL Draft, posted the best first half of his career. The former Calgary Dino standout is on pace to set a new career high in tackles, as he's racked up 36 in nine games this season. His career high came in 2015 with Winnipeg, when he made 52 defensive tackles, had six on special teams, had five sacks, and added two interceptions.

A Calgary native, Hurl played three seasons for the Dinos between 2009 and 2011, winning three consecutive Hardy Cups. Individually, Hurl was the 2011 Canada West Defensive Player of the Year after finishing the regular season with 67 tackles.

Hurl takes the field this Sunday in Regina, as the Blue Bombers take on the Roughriders at Mosaic Stadium (2 p.m. CST) as part of the CFL's annual Labour Day weekend.
