BRANDON – The Brandon University Bobcats women's volleyball team picked up a big win coming off the semester break, beating the University of Saskatchewan Huskies in straight sets on Friday night. Set scores were 25-22, 25-15, and 25-16.

The Bobcats stormed out of the gates early taking the first set 25-22 behind seven kills from Jodie Baker, and kept their foot firmly on the gas pedal from there, taking the match in convincing fashion.

The win couldn't have come at a more important time for the Bobcats as well, as it snaps a six-match losing streak in conference play as the 'Cats ramp up this second half in preparation of the team's first time hosting CIS nationals this season.

Baker finished the match with nine kills on 17 swings, good for a .353 attack efficiency. Shanlee Mclennan also finished with nine kills. Natasha Rupa had 23 assists in her first conference start at setter for the Bobcats. Bobcat libero Donata Hubert finished the contest with a match-high 17 digs.

Bobcats Head Coach Lee Carter was most happy about his team's ability to stay composed when they got to an early lead.

"I thought the girls execute really well. They passed the ball and we played some great defense," says Carter. "Jodie Baker was phenomenal today. She blocked really well and hit the ball, and did everything that we needed to and set the tone early when they were pushing us, so it was a good team effort. I'm happy."

The Huskies' Taylor Annala and Emily Humbert each had seven kills, while Josie Leduc added six. Jina Barker had 28 assists.

The win improves Brandon's record to 4-9 while the Huskies fall below the .500 mark at 6-7.

The two teams will play again in the second half of the weekend series Saturday night at the Healthy Living Centre in Brandon. First serve is set for 5pm.
