Huskies Extend Winning Streak to Four

SASKATOON – The University of Saskatchewan Huskies extended their winning streak to four Saturday night with a 3-1 (25-19, 21-25, 25-23, 25-12) over the Winnipeg Wesmen at the PAC.

The weekend sweep over the Wesmen improves the Huskies record to 6-6 on the season. It is the first time since the 1998-99 season that they have hit the semester break at .500 or better. The Huskies hit the break sitting fifth in the Canada West standings. Winnipeg falls to 3-9 with the loss.

After splitting the first two sets, Saskatchewan came from behind to take the pivotal third set. The Huskies trailed by five at 14-9 before three kills by Emmalyn Copping brought the Huskies back. The teams would trade points until a Winnipeg timeout after which Saskatchewan took a three point lead. With the deficit at four Tia Boroski tired to bring the Wesmen back with a pair of kills but her final attack couldn't beat the Huskie block as Saskatchewan took the set.

A 6-1 start to the fourth put Saskatchewan in control of the final set. The Huskies grew the advantage to nine at 15-6 with a kill from setter Jina Barker. Saskatchewan would cost to the victory, closing the match on a 4-0 run capped off by a Barker service ace.

Emmalyn Copping led the Huskies with a match-high 19 kills. Emily Humbert put home nine more kills and added three service aces in the win. Setter Jina Barker finished the match with 46 assists.

For Winnipeg, Tia Boroski recorded 19 kills on 34 attacks to go along with a team-high 13 digs. Karissa Kuhr added 11 more kills and notched three service aces, while setter Jayme Menzies racked up 33 assists.

Saskatchewan returns to Canada West action January 8-9 on the road against the Brandon Bobcats. Winnipeg opens up 2016 the same weekend when they travel to Edmonton to face the MacEwan Griffins.
