Huskies Notch Third Consecutive Win

SASKATOON – The University of Saskatchewan Huskies won their third straight match, sweeping the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-0 (25-23. 25-22, 25-19) Friday night at the PAC.

With the win Saskatchewan improves to 5-6 with one game to go before the December break. Winnipeg drops to 3-8 with the loss.

The Huskies opened the match on a 4-0 run to take the momentum early on home court. That lead would slowly decrease as the Wesmen clawed back to within one at 11-10. A 4-1 Huskies spurt would be enough to stay ahead for good in the set that was finished off by a Taylor Annala kill.

In the second set it was Winnipeg taking the early 4-0 lead. The Huskies would quickly close the gap and grab their first lead of the set at 9-8. The Huskies would start to pull away thanks to a string of three straight kills by Annala. Karissa Kuhr put home back-to-back kills to keep the Wesmen in it, before Emmalyn Copping would finish off a pair of sets from Jina Barker to give the Huskies a 25-22 set win.

Winnipeg took advantage of some Huskie errors to jump ahead early in the third. Saskatchewan would spurt ahead of the Wesmen at 17-12 on a Josie LeDuc attack. Winnipeg could not recover from that deficit as the teams traded points down the stretch.

Taylor Annala led the Huskies with 10 kills in the match. Josie LeDuc added another eight kills to go along with six blocks. Jenn Heuser finished with 11 digs.

For the Wesmen, Karissa Kuhr and Tia Boroski both recorded seven kills on the night. Boroski also added a match-high 16 kills.

The two teams meet again tomorrow night in the final match before the semester break. First serve is set for 6 p.m. at the PAC.
