Huskies Fall to No. 1 Heat

SASKATOON – After dropping the first set of the match, the top ranked UBC Okanagan Heat rallied for a 3-1 (19-25, 27-25, 25-20, 25-14) victory Friday night at the PAC.

The Heat trailed in the second set until going on a six-point run to take a 21-18 lead. From there, the number on team in the CIS would protect its lead to even the match at one set each before going on to win the next two.

With the win UBCO improves to 3-0 on the season while the Huskies drop their first match of the year to fall to 2-1.

Saskatchewan won the first set thanks to a 10-2 start. The Heat would cut it to a one-point lead at 15-14 before the Huskies would pull away again for the set win.

In the third, the Heat opened the set with an early lead before letting the Huskies back into it midway through the set. Saskatchewan would lead 16-13 before another six-point run got UBCO in front again.

The final set was close locked up at eight until the Heat went on a strong run to close the set 25-14.

Saskatchewan's Emmalyn Copping led all players with 20 kills in the match on 49 attacks. Jina Barker was effective in setting up Copping and all of the Huskies with 34 assists.

The Heat's balanced attack proved effective in the win. Three UBCO players registered double digit kill totals. Breanna Beamish led the way with 13 kills, while Megan Festival and Katie Wuttunee chipped in with 11 and 10 respectively. Kailin Jones was busy in the back line with 10 digs on the night.

The two teams meet again tomorrow night at 5 p.m. in the PAC.
