Dinos Beat Wesmen In Three To Complete Weekend Sweep

The University of Calgary Dinos completed a regular season opening sweep over the University of Winnipeg Wesmen with a 3-0 (26-24, 25-19, 25-22) victory Sunday afternoon in Winnipeg.

Calgary now 2-0 on the season defeated Winnipeg (0-2) in four sets on Saturday afternoon.

Janna Ogle led Calgary with 11 kills. Ali Woolley led the team in digs with 16 and finished with nine kills.

Winnipeg was led by Ozana Nikolic's 12 kills. Tia Boroski was next with 11.

The first set looked similar to the epic battle that took place in the opening match. Both teams exchanged points to start the contest with the hometown Wesmen grabbing a 16-15 lead at the technical break. Calgary took advantage of three Winnipeg errors to take a 19-17 lead late in the set. The errors did not phase the Wesmen as they reeled off six straight points to take a 23-19 lead and were on the verge of winning the opening set. The Dinos fought back going on a 7-1 run to win the set 26-24.

Calgary used their momentum from the opening set to lead 16-12 at the technical break of the second set. Another run by the Wesmen closed the gap to 18-16 until back to back kills by Janna Ogle and a cross court kill by Brianna Solberg extended the Dinos lead to 21-16. Calgary eventually went on to win the set 25-19.

The third set was a carbon copy of the previous set. Calgary led 16-14 at the break only to see the determined Wesmen team score four straight points soon after to take a 19-17 lead. Calgary as they did in previous sets regrouped, going on a 8-3 run to win the set 25-22.

Calgary will be home to Brandon next weekend. Winnipeg will be on the road in Langley, BC to take on Trinity Western.
