BISONS SALVAGE WEEKEND SPLIT WITH THREE SET DEFEAT OF HUSKIES

With a 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-22) win, the University of Manitoba Bisons salvaged a weekend split with the host University of Saskatchewan Huskies Saturday night at the PAC in Saskatoon.

Needing a win to stay in the Canada West women's volleyball playoff hunt, the Bisons recovered after losing 3-1 (25-16, 19-25, 25-17, 25-22) a night earlier with an efficient three set win.

With the weekend split, Manitoba, the reigning CIS champions, are 10-10 on the season and hold onto the final playoff position with four matches left. Saskatchewan is 5-15.

Manitoba had control in both the first and second sets expanding big leads that the Huskies couldn't recover from. The Bisons won 25-19 and 25-17 in the frames.

The Huskies turned the tables in the third set growing an eight-point lead at 16-8. Manitoba went on a 13-2 run that included three service aces and four attack attempts that sailed long by the Huskies to lead 20-18. The Huskies couldn't regain the lead, losing 25-22.

Rachel Cockrell led the Bisons in the victory tallying a match-high 19 kills, while Jordana Milne added another 10. Caleigh Dobie led the Bisons with 14 digs in the match.

Middle blockers Kayla Tycholiz and Emily Humbert each tallied nine kills for Saskatchewan. Anne Hanbidge added 11 digs for the Huskies.

The Huskies travel to meet the Trinity Western Spartans next weekend, while Manitoba returns home for a home-and-home series with cross-town rival the Winnipeg Wesmen.
