KELOWNA, BC – In a battle of two top ten CIS teams the home team held court, as two teams using balanced attacks played four sets of Canada West women's volleyball in Kelowna with the UBC Okanagan Heat emerging victorious over the Calgary Dinos 3-1 (19-25, 25-19, 25-19, 25-22).

Brianna Beamish, who finished the match off with a patented laser beam in the fourth set (25-22), led UBC Okanagan with 10 kills. Calgary appeared ready to push the second ranked Heat into a fifth and deciding set as the Dinos led 15-10 and 18-16, but for the second straight set UBC Okanagan was able to close out Calgary after a 19-19 score.

Calgary had three players with 10 kills to lead the sixth ranked Dinos: Kate Pexman (.000), Ali Woolley (.125), and Jaylynn Moffatt (.286) all hit for ten with Moffatt being the most efficient of the three.

Calgary out-blocked UBC Okanagan in the four sets as a team 13-11 with Jordhynn Guy leading the Dinos with five at the net and Katy Klomps topped UBC Okanagan with six.

Beamish finished with five blocks and 11 digs for UBC Okanagan, Megan Festival chipped in with 11 of her own and connected for eight kills. Chandler Proch was named player of the match with 28 assists.

The first set saw Calgary battle back two times (5-11), and (15-17) to finally take the lead 19-18 and score six of the next seven for the win. Jaylynn Moffatt's two service aces for Calgary's 14th and 15th points changed the complexion of the set to the visiting side.

To avoid going down two sets UBC Okanagan relied on fourth year Brianna Beamish in the second set as her five point service run that started at 5-5 gave UBC Okanagan a slight bulge, and they never looked back finishing the set 25-19 with a Myrte Schön kill.

Myrte Schön served for five straight points and finishes the third set with an ace as a 19-19 tight third set finished in favour of the Kelowna squad 25-19.

With the win, the ninth straight in conference play for UBC Okanagan, their record improves to 13-4. Calgary's two game winning streak end with the road loss and the Dinos now are 10-7 in Canada West. 

The two top ten teams will play again in Kelowna, tomorrow night (Jan 10) with first serve at 5 p.m.
