Bobcats struggle early but finish strong

BRANDON, Man. – The Brandon Bobcats came out flat against the visiting Regina Cougars Saturday night, but found their stride in the remaining sets winning the match 3-1 (9-25, 25-18, 25-13, 25-18).

The Bobcats struggled to find any rhythm in the first set, but quickly turned it around. After dropping the first set in dramatic fashion, Brandon went into the set break and figured it out easily controlling the remaining three sets.

In the first the Bobcats hit -0.143 as a team, but then improved in each of the remaining sets. The Cougars defensive production declined as the match went on, opening the door for the dramatic turn-around by BU.

Tori Dakin and Shanlee McLennan each had 10 kills for the Bobcats, Dakin picking up 11 digs for a double-double. McLennan was one-shy of a double-double with nine digs.

Mary Thomson had 38 assists while libero Donata Huebert had 17 digs for Brandon.

The Cougars were led by Chelsea Ziolkowski and Michelle Sweeting who put up 12 kills each. Leah Shevkenek had 34 assists and Lindsey Braul finished with a match-high 19 digs.

The win gives Brandon a weekend split after dropping Friday's contest, improving the Bobcats record to 8-6. The Cougars fall to 4-10 on the season.

Both teams now enter the December break before resuming Canada West league play in January.
