Griffins use strong service game to sweep Huskies

For the first time this season the MacEwan University Griffins didn't treat their fans to a fifth set as they knocked off the University of Saskatchewan Huskies 3-1 (25-18, 19-25, 25-18, 25-16) Saturday evening at City Center Gymnasium.

The Griffins took a competitive first in large part to a late 6-0 run with Madison Porisky serving. Jessica Brown ran a balanced attack for the Griffins accumulating 14 assists.

A pair of aces by Emmalyn Copping sparked the Huskies to an early 5-1 second set lead. The Griffins regained some momentum, but it would not be enough as the Huskies won the set 25-19, tying the match at one set apiece. The Huskies offence went through Copping as she picked up three kills in the set.

Dakota Wilson came off the bench halfway through the third set to give the Griffins a boost, sparking their own 6-1 run to take control of the set. Cassidy Kinsella continued to pace the Griffins offensively with five kills and a timely block to close out the set 25-18.

Anne Hanbidge was instrumental in the final set, booking three kills and five digs as the Huskies comeback attempt fell short. The Griffins continued to serve tough as they closed out the match with a 25-16 win.

Kinsella finished the match with a game-high 17 kills and added 10 digs to be named the Griffins player of the game. Hanbidge ended with eight kills and 14 digs to earn the award for the Huskies.

Next up for the Griffins is a road series against the University of British Columbia Okanagan with the first game going Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. The Huskies will return home to host the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds beginning Friday evening at 5:00 p.m.
