No. 3 UBC Okanagan takes out Cougars in three

The No. 3-ranked UBC Okanagan Heat took care of the Regina Cougars in three sets on Friday night in Canada West women's volleyball on the U of R campus at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.

The Heat tore out of the gates with a big 25-8 win in the first, hitting .346 as a team and getting four kills by Kaitlynn Given and five blocks by Katy Klomps in the opening set alone.

The second and third sets were more closely contested, but both resulted in 25-21 wins for UBC Okanagan. The second was actually tied 20-20 before a late 5-1 rally by the Heat gave them a commanding 2-0 lead in the match, and the visitors never trailed in their victory in the third.

Given and Megan Festival both ended up with a team-high eight kills for UBC Okanagan, while Brianna Beamish had seven and Klomps and Katie Wuttunee both had six. Klomps was a force at the net for the Heat, registering 12 blocks as UBC Okanagan had 14 as a team over the three-set match. Wuttunee entered the match as Canada West's leader in hitting percentage and that only got better on Friday, as her six kills came on just seven attempts as she improves from .349 to .366 on the season.

Libero Kailin Jones added a team-high 10 digs for UBC Okanagan, which improves its Canada West record to 9-4 with the win.

Tori Glynn led all players in both kills (9) and digs (14) for the Cougars (3-8).

The two teams will meet again at the CKHS on Saturday night (5:00).
