Griffins tame the Huskies in five-setter

Once again the MacEwan University Griffins took a home match the distance as they knocked off the University of Saskatchewan Huskies 3-2 (10-25, 25-17, 25-17, 13-25, 15-12) on Friday evening at City Center Gymnasium.

Capitalizing on a sloppy Griffins opening set, the Huskies raced out to a 10-2 lead and dominated the first set winning 25-10.  Emmalyn Copping lead the way with six kills for the Huskies.

The second set was complete opposite of the first as the Griffins came roaring back to take a commanding 9-1 lead. Madison Porisky paced the Griffins with five second set kills, leading to a 25-17 win.

After a pair of lopsided sets, the third was much closer with neither team able to gain much traction until the Griffins pulled away late to take the set 25-17.  An improved defensive showing was the difference for the Griffins.

Anne Hanbidge served well with three aces keying a 6-0 Huskies run as they opened an 8-2 fourth set lead. The Griffins were unable to mount a comeback as the Huskies forced a fifth set with a 25-13 win.

In the final set the Griffins' quickly took control as their service game limited the Huskies attack.  Strategic serving led to four blocks for the Griffins, as they took the deciding set 15-12.

Christina Campbell picked up seven kills and 16 digs to earn player of the game honours for the Griffins. The Huskies award went to Jennifer Hueser who recorded  27 digs.

The rematch will take place Saturday evening at City Center Gymnasium at 5:00 p.m.
