Wesmen Complete Weekend Sweep Over Griffins

The University of Winnipeg Wesmen Women's Volleyball team completed a weekend sweep over the MacEwan University Griffins with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-14, 25-19) victory Sunday afternoon in the Dr. David F. Anderson Gymnasium in Winnipeg.

Winnipeg opened the weekend series with a hard fought five set win Saturday night.

The victory improves Winnipeg's record to 3-1. The Griffins fall to .500 at 2-2.

Fourth year Tia Boroski led the Wesmen with 10 kills. Boroski also had a strong defensive match finishing with 11 digs. Hailey Buhler added eight kills and three service aces. Setter Ellina Domnidou had 29 assists and 13 digs. Mackenzie Jeffrey was in on a team leading five blocks.

Second year outside Cassidy Kinsella led the Griffins with a match high 12 kills. Madison Lakey weas the team leader in digs with 13.

After a relatively even start to the first set, Winnipeg on back to back kills by Boroski found some breathing room leading 16-11 at the technical break. A late 4-0 run by MacEwan closed the gap to 21-19. Winnipeg went on to win the opening set 25-22.

In the second set the Wesmen continued their strong play jumping out to a 16-9 lead at the technical timeout. Winnipeg took control of the match winning the set 25-14.

The third set had both teams exchanging points early on, with Winnipeg holding a 16-13 lead at the break. Looking to close out the match, Winnipeg outscored the Griffins 9-6 down the stretch to win the third set 25-19.

Winnipeg will be on the road next week for the first time in the regular season. The Wesmen will play the Regina Cougars on Friday and Saturday. MacEwan will travel to Calgary to take on the Mount Royal University Cougars.
