PANDAS SWEEP HUSKIES IN THREE

The visiting No. 2 ranked University of Alberta Pandas made quick work of the University of Saskatchewan Huskies with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-9, 25-20) win Friday night at the PAC in Saskatoon.

Outside hitter Kacey Otto led the Pandas in the victory tallying 11 kills, while fellow outside hitter Meg Casault added another nine kills and middle Dione Lang added eight. Lang also recorded one solo block and seven assisted blocks in the match.

Outside hitter Emmalyn Copping led the Huskies with eight kills on the night, while middle Emily Humbert added another six. Setter Jina Barker recorded 19 assists with blocks.

With the win, the Pandas improve to 2-1 in the young Canada West women's volleyball season, while the Huskies drop to 1-2.

Tied at five, the Pandas began to break away and quickly built a 21-14 lead.  A service error gave Saskatchewan back the ball and the Huskies took the next point on a kill by Emily Humbert. Alberta went on a 4-1 run en route to the 25-17 win. Casault was dominant in the set with five kills.

Alberta jumped to a quick lead in the second set at 6-1.  Despite the Huskies cutting the lead in half, the Pandas continued to control the set and were the first to the technical timeout, leading 16-8. The Pandas walked to the 25-9 win.

Saskatchewan kept within two points of the Pandas for the majority of the third set. At 16-14, the Pandas scored the next three points on kills by Casault, Lang and a Huskie error. Saskatchewan made a bid for the comeback with two Kayla Tycholiz service aces to make the set 22-19. But Alberta went on a 3-1 run to close out the match at 25-20.

The two teams will meet again Saturday night at the PAC. First serve is at 6 p.m.
