Wesmen Gain Weekend Split With Win Over Huskies

The University of Winnipeg Wesmen salvaged a weekend split against the University of Saskatchewan Huskies after a 3-1 victory in a Saturday matinee match in the Dr. David F. Anderson Gymnasium in Winnipeg.

Saskatchewan (1-1) won the opening match of the weekend in a five set thriller Friday night over Winnipeg (1-1).

Third year right side Hailey Buhler led the Wesmen with13 kills and 16 defensive digs. Mackenzie Jeffrey was next in kills with eight. Setter Ellina Domnidou had 32 assists, 11 digs and three service aces.

The Huskies were led by third year middle Emily Humbert's team high 13 kills. Taylor Annala followed with nine. Outside hitter Emmalyn Copping led the team in digs with 16.

Saskatchewan grabbed an early lead in the first set racing out to a 16-9 lead at the technical timeout. The Wesmen closed the gap but were facing set point at 24-20 until a service error, combined by back-to-back aces by Ellina Domnidou closed the gap even further at 24-23. On the next play the Huskies closed out the set on a kill by Emily Humbert.

In the second set Winnipeg took a 16-13 lead at the technical timeout. The three point advantage was the largest for the remainder of the set as both teams exchanged points to 24-23 in Winnipeg's favor. Domnidou put down a kill on the next play to close out the set for Winnipeg by a score of 25-23.

The third set was another close affair, with Winnipeg clinging to a 16-15 lead at the break. Winnipeg took a 21-19 lead late in the set and closed out the third set winning four of the last five points to take the set 25-20.

Saskatchewan had things going their way in the fourth set leading 16-12 at the technical timeout. After a 4-1 run by the Wesmen closed the gap to 18-17, the Wesmen ran off six consecutive points to take a 23-18 lead. The Huskies closed the gap to 23-21 but kills by Chelsea Jones and Buhler closed out the fourth set and the match in Winnipeg's favor.

Winnipeg will be home next weekend to MacEwan University. Saskatchewan will be home to the Alberta Pandas.
