COUGARS WIN IN A DRAMATIC FIVE SETTER

COUGARS WIN IN A DRAMATIC FIVE SETTER

Calgary – Mount Royal was able to outlast the Brandon University Bobcats on Saturday night defeating them 3-2 (16-25, 26-24, 14-25, 25-23, 17-15) in five sets. Fallon Middlemiss was the Cougar's player of the game and leading scorer with 17.5 points.

Brandon came out firing much like they did on Friday night. The Cougars made a number of errors and found themselves down eight points early. Brandon put the set away quickly, winning 25-16.

The rapid throttling in the first set woke the Cougars up in the second. A back and forth dog fight throughout the set, had neither team hold a lead higher than three points. With Middlemiss at the line, Mount Royal was able to serve out the last three points and win 26-24.

The third set was all Bobcats. Mount Royal fell back into old habits and much the like the first set, Brandon had their way with the Cougars winning 25-14.

Entering the fourth set the Cougars knew it was do-or-die. Long rallies and intense kills had the teams locked at 23. With Carolyn O'Dwayer on serve, the Cougars were able to force Brandon into two attacking errors to win the set.

In the fifth and final set, the momentum had clearly swung in favour of the Cougars. Brandon kept it close but with the crowd behind them, nothing was going to stand in Mount Royal's way. Tied at 13, Jenna Smith had a sneaky little tip that put MRU up by a point. The teams traded points until the game's top player, Fallon Middlemiss, hammered a kill down to seal the match.

Brandon will head home where they will host the University of Calgary Dinos for a weekend series beginning on Friday night.

The Cougars will hit the road next weekend, travelling to Vancouver to take on last year's Canada West champions the UBC Thunderbirds.
