BRANDON, MB -The #2 Brandon Bobcats earned a weekend spit, and clinch as quarter-final host with a 3-0 (25-13, 25-11, 25-21) win Saturday night over the #4 Trinity Western Spartans.

Rookie left-side Vaovai Aiono led the way for the ‘Cats with 11 kills, four digs, two service aces, and four blocks. Senior middle Alexis Loewen added an impressive eight blocks to give her 105 total blocks on the season, setting the school record for a season total.
 
Sophie Carpentier notched nine kills, six digs, and one service ace for the Spartans, while Royal Richardson added five kills and two blocks.  Richardson and Carpentier were the only Spartan players who finished with a positive attack percentage.
 
Both teams hold records of 15-5 with just two matches remaining in the regular season.
 
Brandon heads to Calgary to face the Dinos on February 7, while Trinity will host Winnipeg on the same night.

WINNIPEG - The #5 Manitoba Bisons were defeated by the #6 UBC Okanagan Heat 3-2 (25-21, 25-18, 18-25, 23-25, 15-11) to split the weekend series on Saturday at Investors Group Athletic Centre (U of Manitoba campus).

UBC Okanagan had a better offensive output on Saturday with three players in double-digit kills and were led by Megan Festival with 15 kills, followed by Kaitlynn Given and Brianna Beamish, who had 13 and 12 kills respectively. Manitoba was led by Rachel Cockrell with 18 kills, followed by Taylor Pischke with 15 kills and three service aces.

With the win, UBC Okanagan improves to 12-8 while Manitoba drops to 12-8, leaving both teams in a tie for fourth.

The Bisons travel to Kamloops next weekend to face Thompson Rivers on Friday, February 7. UBC Okanagan returns home next weekend to play against visiting Regina.

Pandas-Cougars Stats

CALGARY – The Mount Royal Cougars lost 3-0 (30-28, 25-17, 25-20) to the Alberta Pandas on Saturday at Kenyon Court.

Karly Janssen had a game high 15.5 points for the Pandas followed by teammates Kacy Otto and Dione Lang with 12 points. Carolyn O'Dwyer led the Cougars with 11 points.

The Cougars are now 6-14 after the loss; the Pandas move to 11-9 with the victory.

Alberta will host UBC next weekend for their last two games before the playoffs begin.

The Cougars will head to Saskatchewan next weekend to play their final two games of the season.

Huskies-Thunderbirds Stats

VANCOUVER - The #1 UBC Thunderbirds closed their senior weekend with a second consecutive clean sweep of the Saskatchewan Huskies (25-11, 25-19, 25-17) Saturday evening in War Memorial Gymnasium.

With the victory, UBC improves to 18-2; Saskatchewan falls to 8-12.

Lisa Barclay lead the 'Birds with a game-high 11 kills and eight digs, while Rosie Schlagintweit and Abbey Keeping recorded seven and six kills, respectively. Kirsty Setterlund led the game with 27 assists.
 
Saskatchewan's Candace Hueser paced the Huskies with eight kills, while setter Jina Barker tallied 21 assists and seven digs.
 
Next weekend, the Thunderbirds will travel to Edmonton to take on the Alberta Pandas and the Huskies will host the Mount Royal Cougars.

Dinos-Wesmen Stats

WINNIPEG - The Winnipeg Wesmen completed a weekend sweep over the Calgary Dinos with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-14, 25-16) victory on Saturday.

Winnipeg (8-12) defeated Calgary (5-15) in straight sets in the opening match on Friday.

Ozana Nikolic led the Wesmen with a match high 15 kills and 16 defensive digs. Carleen Kruschel added 11 kills and 10 defensive digs.

Janna Ogle led Calgary with eight kills and seven defensive digs. Ali Woolley had seven kills to go along with seven defensive digs.

The Wesmen will close out their regular season schedule on the road next weekend against Trinity Western. Calgary will be at home to face Brandon.

REGINA -  The Regina Cougars won a second three-set sweep over the Thompson Rivers WolfPack (25-18, 25-21, 25-11) in as many nights on Saturday at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
 
The Cougars are now 10-10 on the season and havce clinched a spot in the conference playoffs.

Regina's Desiree Ates led all players with 14 kills as the fifth-year outside hitter becomes just the fourth player in Canada West history with 300 in a single season. Ates also had 11 digs for the lone double-double of the match, while Michelle Sweeting had 12 kills and hit for a team-high .409 percentage.
 
Brianne Rauch led Thompson Rivers (0-20) with seven kills, while Kaitlin Lomas, Carly Nelson, and Morgan Kolasa each had five. Lomas's five kills came on just nine attacks with only one error as she led all players with a .444 hitting percentage and also tied Sweeting for the match high with four blocks.
 
Thompson Rivers will finish its season next weekend at home against Manitoba. As for the Cougars, they'll look to continue their torrid second semester on the road at UBC Okanagan next Friday and Saturday.

VANCOUVER - On the opening night of senior weekend, the #1 UBC Thunderbirds improved to 17-2 with a sweep of the Saskatchewan Huskies (25-11, 25-19, 25-18).
 
The Thunderbirds were led by seniors Rosie Schlagintweit and Lisa Barclay who had 12 and 10 kills, respectively; these two comprised 78 per cent of UBC's overall kills. Setter Kirsty Setterlund contributed a game-high 23 assists
 
­­­­­Candace Hueser and Emily Humbert led the Huskies with five kills apiece. Setter Jina Barker tallied 18 assists. With the loss, Saskatchewan falls to 8-11.

After the match, graduating seniors Setterlund, Mariah Bruinsma, Kristine Johnson and Briana Liau Kent were all honoured by the UBC volleyball program for their contributions.  
 
The two teams will close out the weekend double-header on Saturday at 5 p.m. at War Memorial Gymnasium.

BRANDON, MB - The #2 Brandon Bobcats lost in straight sets to the #4 Trinity Western Spartans Friday, 3-0 (25-21, 25-10, 25-15).
 
Victoria Dakin led the Bobcat attack with nine kills, five digs, and one block.  Alexis Loewen added six kills and four blocks.
 
Sophie Carpentier had 12 kills, three blocks, and four services aces for the Spartans, while Royal Richardson added 12 kills, seven digs, two blocks and two service aces.
 
The win brings the Spartans record to 15-4, while Brandon falls to 14-5.
 
Both teams will face off again on Saturday at 5:00 p.m.

WINNIPEG - The #5 Manitoba Bisons defeated the #6 UBC Okanagan Heat by a score of 3-0 (26-24, 25-17, 25-21) to take sole control of fourth place in their first game of the weekend on Friday at Investors Group Athletic Centre (U of Manitoba campus).

Playing in front of a raucous home crowd, the Bisons had two players with double-digit kills after Taylor Pischke and Rachel Cockrell both put on an impressive performance with both players scoring ten kills. For the Heat, Megan Festival had 11 kills while Katy Klomps and Katie Wuttunee each had nine.

With the win, Manitoba improves to 12-7 and in control of fourth place while UBC Okanagan drops to 11-8 in the Canada West regular season standings and fall to fifth in the conference.

The Bisons will play the Heat again in a rematch on Saturday at 5 p.m.

WINNIPEG - The Winnipeg Wesmen kept their Canada West playoff hopes alive with a straight sets 3-0 (25-21, 25-13, 25-23) victory over the visiting Calgary Dinos at the Dr. David F. Anderson Gymnasium on Friday.

Winnipeg with the win improves to 7-12, and remain two games back of the final playoff spot. Calgary drops to 5-14.

Fifth year left side Carleen Kruschel led the Wesmen with 15 kills and two service aces. Third year left side Ozana Nikolic returned to the lineup and finished with 14 kills and 13 digs.

Calgary was led by Ali Woolley's 14 kills, 11 defensive digs and two blocks. Janna Ogle had six kills and nine digs.

The two teams will meet in the late match Saturday night. Start time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Fifth year players Carleen Kruschel and Alicia Perry will play their final regular season home match and each will be recognized prior to the match.

REGINA – Honoured as part of Senior Night prior to the match, fifth-year outside hitter Desiree Ates broke the University of Regina's single-season kills record as the Cougars swept Thompson Rivers in three sets on Friday at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
 
Ates had 11 kills during the match to give her 286 for the season, which leads the entire CIS and is four more than the previous U of R record set by Tammy Julé during the 2006-07 campaign.
 
The Cougars needed less than an hour to take care of business, winning 25-12, 25-12, and 25-5 to secure a critical late-season victory and improve to 9-10 on the season.
 
Michelle Sweeting had a huge game for the U of R, matching Ates with 11 kills on just 13 attacks for a blistering .846 hitting percentage. Molly Wade-Cummings (5-0-6, .833) and Tori Glynn (7-0-9, .778) also had fine percentages for the U of R in the win. Chelsea Ziolkowski added eight kills, while Ates also led all players with 10 digs to notch the lone double-double of the contest.
 
Kaitlin Lomas and Carly Nelson both led Thompson Rivers with four kills, while Morgan Kolasa led all players at the net with four blocks. WolfPack libero Gabby Fortin had a team-high six digs as TRU falls to 0-19 on the season.
 
The two teams will meet again on Saturday night (5:00) at the CKHS.
