CALGARY - The Mount Royal Cougars women's soccer team closed their regular season with a game against the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns on Sunday. Both teams were coming off a recent loss, and both were hoping to change that in their last game of the season. MRU scored one in both halves and took the contest 2-0 at Stadium Field.

In the first half of the game at the fifteen-minute mark, Cougars forward Kaitlyn Clarke took a long-range shot at the Pronghorns net which struck the crossbar and narrowly crossed the goal-line which put Mount Royal in the driver's seat. At halftime, the score remained 1-0 for the Cougars.

The second half kicked off and after a period of play, a fabulous save lead to a goal. At one end Rose Hemans made a stupendous diving save to stop a breakaway from Lethbridge. The Cougars collected the rebound and went the other direction and Kaitlyn Clarke scored her second of the game. This lead remained, and the Cougars finished their last game of the season with a win, improving to 6-6-2, while the Pronghorns finished the season with a final record of 2-11-1. The Booster Juice Players of the Game were Raeleen Vanden Dungen from the Pronghorns and Claire Thorimbert from the Cougars.

As it was senior night, Claire Thorimbert and Erin Holt bid their goodbyes to the Cougars and Thorimbert called it bittersweet saying "it's been a long five years but also the shortest five of my life. I'm excited we get to go to playoffs and I'm also excited for a new chapter of my life afterwards."

Holt said she was proud of the team's historic regular season, but knows the hardest part now begins, "I'm looking forward to playoffs to fight for even more together with the team and then I hope next year the team does even better."

With the win, the Cougars finish with the highest amount of points and wins, they've ever had to date since joining U SPORTS.
