WolfPack explode offensively to take Wesmen

KAMLOOPS, BC—Chantal Gammie was poised to have a break out match and on Saturday (Oct 13), the first year Thompson Rivers University WolfPack forward did.  The rookie from Smithers, BC had a first half hat trick powering her squad to a 6-1 win over the University of Winnipeg Wesmen in Canada West women's soccer action.

Gammie now has six goals on the year as the WolfPack extended their unbeaten streak to three as they battle for a playoff position with two weeks left in the regular season.

Camryn Curts , Jollee Perrier and Katherine Walkley had the other goals for Thompson Rivers.  Mya Lee had the lone Winnipeg marker in the second half.

This was the first time these teams had met each other in three years and the first time ever for the Wesmen at Hillside Stadium.  It featured the two busiest keepers in the Canada West.  Madison Fordyce entered the match with 65 saves. That was 10 more than TRU keeper Danielle Robertson.  Fordyce had nine saves in this match.  Robertson had one.

SYNOPSIS

The WolfPack had their biggest offensive explosion of the season with the five goals in the first half. They outshot the Wesmen 15-4 in the opening half and had 10 shots on goal in comparison to the Wesmen's 4.

The victory keeps TRU in the playoff hunt in the Pacific Division with three matches to play.  Thompson Rivers moves to 3-7-1 on the year while Winnipeg falls to 0-7-4.

4. 34:56—TRU—Camryn Curts (2^nd year, midfield, Kamloops, BC)  was the receipent of a pass 20 yards out after Walkley steam rolled down the left side, went deep and centered it. Curts scored her first goal of the year.  TRU 4  WINNIPEG 0
5. 36:03—TRU—Chantal Gammie scores her hat trick goal and she moved in on Fordyce, moved to her left and then scooted by and put in the empty net . Her sixth goal of the year.  TRU 5  WINNIPEG  0

On Match: "We needed the three points and we thought we had opportunity with a team struggling from the Prairies. It feels great.  We thought we could use our speed and aggression against them. It paid off so big in the first half with five goals. The girls got rolling and you could see our confidence grow. We wanted to play a complete 90.  We talked about that at half time.  Good teams try and finish it out. We weren't trying to run up the score. We made five or six subs but kept the momentum going."

On seeing work on fundamentals pay off : "From coming out a very tough first half of the year, much that we didn't have success you learn from playing top teams. You saw last week against UBCO that we were turning things around. We had a great week of training—weather wise and everything. They are flowing into the right folds in our system. I can't say enough things about Marlie Rittinger. She joined us for the last month. She is having a tremendous influence on the other girls about being calm and keeping their heads up and doing the right things. Cam Curts is learning from her.  As great as she has been, she has been playing calmer. Marise (Marissa Mendonca, 4^th year, midfield, Penticton, BC) is playing calmer. Its wonderful to see their performance today.,"

 On game: " We are disappointed. To Thompson Rivers credit, as soon as the whistle blew they were on fire. Everything they hit went in. They had the momentum in the first half. At half time, I told the players we had to change it around.  We held them in the second. We made a few changes. Mya (Lee) came in and scored after sitting and watching. Ultimately I take responsibility.  We are all disappointed. Tomorrow, I hope we have better leadership from senior players that step up and play. We have our work cut out for us tomorrow."

Said it was hard to come back from a 5-0 deficit:  "The nice thing was we didn't give up. It is a learning game as well. If you score a couple of goals in the first ten minutes you can come back. I said that to them at the half. I had a belief we could do that. To the credit of the players coming off the bench, they had some good energy and they were ready to play. The score doesn't reflect how we want to play this weekend. We have to keep going. It is for sure, disappointing."

The WolfPack plays her final home game tomorrow (Sunday October 14^th) versus the University of Manitoba Bisons.  Sunday's kick off will be 1 pm.  The Wesmen will head to Kelowna for a Sunday encounter with the UBCO Heat.
