REGINA – Kyra Vibert scored both goals for the University of Regina Cougars to lift them to a 2-1 victory over the Winnipeg Wesmen on Sunday in a Canada West women's soccer match at the U of R Field.

Vibert almost immediately answered Winnipeg's opening goal which came just over 20 minutes into the first half, and then scored what turned out to be the winner in the 32nd minute. Kylie Bolton secured the win with five saves for the Cougars, possibly the best of which came on a diving effort following a Winnipeg corner in the waning moments of the match.

Maeghan Lindsay scored the goal for the Wesmen, who move to 0-1-1 on the season with the loss.

"I thought the win was deserved today and I'm very happy for the team," Cougars head coach Bob Maltman said. "We showed a lot more composure in our performance than we did yesterday and Vibert's two finishes were fantastic. Winnipeg had a couple of key players that we needed to keep an eye on and we had a good collective effort at the back."

Lindsay's goal opened the scoring, and it was an odd one. The fourth-year forward's corner kick eluded Bolton and initially looked to have been cleared off the line by Regina's Camryn Beaumont, but the referee signaled a goal several seconds later to give Winnipeg the early lead.

But less than two minutes later, Vibert struck thanks to a pretty passing play that started with Sydney Langen on the left side of the box. Langen fed a pass over to Jet Davies, who sent a one-touch through ball to Brigit Sinaga behind the Winnipeg back line. Wesmen keeper Madison Fordyce came out to challenge, but Sinaga slipped it over to Vibert who just had to tap it in to a wide-open net.

Vibert's second goal followed in the 32nd minute after rookie forward Grace Miller sent in a cross from the left. Vibert connected with a superb left-footed volley from 15 yards out, which she sent into the top corner to put the Cougars into the lead for good.

Neither team was able to score in the second half. Besides Bolton's late save following the corner, the rookie keeper also made a great play to deny an open chance in the 61st minute.

Winnipeg will now host four consecutive home matches, starting with Fraser Valley and Trinity Western next weekend and continuing with Prairie Division opponents Calgary and Lethbridge on Sept. 22 and Sept. 23.

The Cougars (1-1-0) have a tough travel weekend upcoming. They'll first head to Prince George, B.C. for a match at UNBC on Friday and then will fly to Edmonton to square off with MacEwan on Sunday.
