VICTORIA – The University of Victoria Vikes women's soccer team overcame a solid Winnipeg Wesmen defence to eke out a 1-0 win on Sep. 16 inside Centennial Stadium.
 
Second-year Vike Kyra Teetzen scored the lone goal of the game, as the Wesmen did well to limit the Vikes scoring opportunities despite being out-shot 26-12 in the match.

Puck Louwes picked up the win in net for the Vikes, making five saves and securing her second shutout of the year in the process. Madison Fordyce had a strong game in net for the Wesmen, recording six saves in the losing effort.
 
A scoreless first half left the Vikes frustrated at the break as the Wesmen were able to pack the middle of the pitch defensively and make key interceptions when necessary.
 
"Our first half was really lacklustre, we didn't have any pizazz or excitement," said Vikes head coach Tracy David. "Winnipeg did a good job, they tried to disrupt the things that we were looking to do and their tackling was superb. They were beating us to the first and second ball in the first half."
 
The scoring chances began to pile up for the Vikes in the second half, as they launched attack after attack into the Winnipeg end of the field but were unable to find the final key pass that would send them through to goal.
 
"I don't think it was a lack of effort from us today," said Wesmen head coach Amy Anderson. "We had some players playing in different positions and they stepped up. We had some rookies that stepped up, and I'm proud of the way they represented our program."
 
The breakthrough finally came for the Vikes in the 72nd minute of play.
 
A ball played deep into the box from Katie Carrothers bounced around the Wesmen eighteen yard box allowing Teetzen, who came into the game as a substitute just minutes before, to power the ball into the bottom left corner of the net.
 
"We always want our players that aren't selected to play to change the game for us when they do get an opportunity, to bring high energy, and she did that more," said David of Teetzen who was named UVic's MVP of the match.
 
The Wesmen had their best chance to equalize just moments later.
 
Rachel Dunsmore did well to get on the end of a ball sent in across the face of the Vikes goal, but her shot attempt went just wide of the post.
 
The Vikes kept the pressure up after the near miss from the Wesmen, creating multiple scoring opportunities that ultimately just missed finding the back of the net.
 
"In the second half we were able to bring that focus better," said David. "I'm still not satisfied with it and we are going to have to work harder at it, but when our team gets going we can do a lot of good things. We just have to believe that we can do it and set our mind to it."
 
The loss drops the Wesmen to 0-3-1 on the season and sends them back to Winnipeg still searching for their first win of the season when they play the Mount Royal Cougars on Sep. 23.
 
"We progressed from last weekend with our defending and we showed a lot of discipline and effort," said Anderson. "I can't ask for anything more and we will keep building from here."
 
With the win the Vikes picked the maximum six points that they could this weekend, moving their record to 3-1-1.
 
Next up for the Vikes is a trip to Interior, where they play the UBC Okanagan Heat on Sep. 23.
