Dinos Knock Off Huskies to Win Bronze

SASKATOON – The University of Calgary Dinos secured a berth in the CIS National Championship with a 1-0 win over the University of Saskatchewan Huskies in the bronze medal match of the Canada West Women's Soccer Select Six Sunday afternoon on Field 7 in PotashCorp Park.

Natalie Arnett scored the lone goal of the match in the 63rd minute. Arnett took the ball down the right side of the pitch splitting a pair of Huskie defenders to break in alone on keeper Kyleigh Vause. The Calgary striker sent a strike to the lower left corner of the net. Vause got a hand on it, but the ball had just enough momentum to tuck inside the post.

Needing a goal to keep their season alive, the Huskies substituted some offensive fire power into the game as time winded down. In the last ten minutes Saskatchewan had a couple of chances to square it up. A free kick with nine minutes to play was redirected just over the bar, and a streaking Huskie defender nearly tipped in a corner kick that was sent to the back post.

With the Huskies pinching up, Calgary looked like they might ice the game when striker Jordan Smith found herself all alone attacking the Huskie goal. Vause came out to challenge and forced Smith off her path allowing a Saskatchewan defender to recover and rush Smith's shot that sailed wide.

Saskatchewan had a pair of chances early in the second half with the match still scoreless. Jenelle Zapski's strike in the 49th minute beat Dinos keeper Samantha Chang-Foidl, but went off the crossbar and bounced just in front of the goal line. Zapski had another dangerous shot from the top of the box just minutes later that a diving Chang-Foidl kept out.

Despite finishing the opening 45 minutes scoreless, there were quality chances for both teams in the first half.

Zapski and Ali Goodman both had opportunities inside the box that Chang-Foidl and the Dinos defenders did well to keep out. Calgary nearly scored on a soft chip by Smith over a challenging Vause that ended up rolling just wide. In the 44th minute a corner kick bounced dangerously in front before being cleared by the Huskies.

At the end of the back and forth match it was Arnett's goal standing up as the game winner to send the Calgary Dinos to the CIS National Championship next week in Vancouver.
