Griffins shut out Pronghorns 2-0

Edmonton, AB…..The MacEwan University Griffins women's soccer team shut-out the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns 2-0 in the final regular season game of the 2015/16 Canada West season at home in Edmonton. The Griffins record is now 7-4-3, while the Pronghorns drops to 2-9-3. MacEwan University has already clinched a playoff position, their opponent will be decided after Sunday's regular season play has ended. 

The Griffins got their first goal at the seven-minute mark as first-year forward Meagan Lemoine, Edmonton, AB scored her sixth goal of the season on third-year Pronghorns keeper Micaela Stone, Camrose, AB. Lemoine was assisted by fifth-year midfielders Jenny Lam and Erika Vecchio, both of Edmonton, AB off a corner kick and cross. The remainder of the half was competitive and strategic with offensive opportunities on both sides, however the score remained 1-0 in favour of the home team.

In the 84th minute Griffins' fifth-year forward Sheena Tracey, Edmonton, AB was fouled in the box by Pronghorns' second-year defender Jesse Dueck, Coaldale, AB. Lam secured the second MacEwan University goal on the penalty kick, beating Stone bottom left for her third goal of the season. MacEwan University kept the pressure on for their seventh win of the season. First-year goalkeeper Emily Burns earned her fourth shut-out of the season.
The Griffins' 'Player of the Game was Vecchio, while the Pronghorns chose second-year midfielder, Erica Augsten, Nelson, BC.
