Pandas Down WolfPack In Battle of Playoff Bound Teams

In a battle of two teams who have already solidified post season berths in the Canada West women's soccer league, the University of Alberta Pandas downed the host Thompson Rivers University WolfPack.

The score was 1-0 on Saturday (Oct 24) at Hillside Stadium

The Pandas improved to 7-5-1 while TRU falls to 4-7-2.

"We brought to the table our game plan of tidy play, looking to win the ball and a one-two touch,' said Pandas coach Liz Jepson.

"It was extremely scambly,"stated WolfPack coach Tom McManus. " I thought we started really well but for some reason, everything came to a halt. It was so slow. Slow on both sides."

The Pandas had the lion share of the scoring chances and had 17 shots in the contest including 10 in the first half.

They were led by Julia Ignacio (5th year, forward, Edmonton,AB).  The former University of Memphis player had four shots on goal.

She counted the matches only marker on the end of a brilliant scoring play where three Alberta players executed some nifty passes which resulted in a three on one opportunity which left WolfPack keeper Taylor Shantz (5th year, Kamloops, BC) nearly defenseless.   Ignacio scored her sixth of the year in the 27 th minute.  Jessie Candish (5th year, forward, Edmonton, AB) drawing the assist.

The WolfPack were playing without a number of regulars who were hurt or serving suspension.  Such was the case with TRU stopper Jodi Hutton (3rd year, Kamloops, BC).   Her absence was obvious on the games lone marker.  "Without a doubt," said McManus. "We could use Jodi Hutton every day.  We missed her desperately.  She and Sarah Seebach (3rd year, stopper, Kamloops, BC)  are brilliant together.  It would have been nice to have both out there today."

Seebach is out with a broken arm suffered three weeks ago against UBCO.

Jepson said one bright spot for her side was her team's backline.  "We have a very mature back line. Both Jamie (Passarenko, 3rd year, midfield, Edmonton, AB) and Annalise (Schellenberg, 5th year, midfield, Vancouver, BC) are stalwarts out there.  Madeline (Smith-Ackert, 4th year, defense, St.Albert, AB) did a great job of limiting penetrating passes."

The WolfPack close out the regular season Sunday (October 25) when they host the University of Northern British Columbia Timberwolves.   Alberta will head down Highway 97 to meet the University of British Columbia Okanagan Heat.

For TRU: their match starts at noon.

After the match, the team will honor their six graduating players: Jaydene Radu (Calgary, AB) along with Brianna Powrie, Katie Sparrow, Emily Oliver, Danielle Fauteux and Taylor Shantz (all Kamloops, BC).

THROW INS:  The TRU Bookstore/McDonalds "Leader of the Pack" player of the match was Kindra Maricle (3rd year, Kamloops, BC) for the second time this season.
