GOMMERINGER NETS EARLY GOALS TO LEAD TWU IN LAST REGULAR SEASON HOME GAME

LANGLEY, British Columbia – Krista Gommeringer (Calgary) got the No. 9 Spartans women's soccer team off to quick start, scoring twice in the first eight minutes of the game, as she helped lead the Spartans to a 6-0 win over Manitoba Friday at Rogers Field.

Gommeringer opened the scoring in the fourth minute with a fast paced goal off the right side line and that proved to be a sign of things to come. The Trinity Western striker managed another goal just four minutes later when she converted a breakaway opportunity.

Brooklyn Tidder (White Rock, B.C.) also found the back of the net twice while Ali Oliverio (Calgary) and Isabella Di Trocchio (Burnaby, B.C.) each tallied first half markers.

Oliverio, who also had an assist on Saturday, is now second in the CIS with 13 points, including a Canada West-leading 10 goals to go with three assists.

The Spartans (9-1-2) are now unbeaten in 11 games. The Bisons (6-4-2) have lost two in a row after dropping a 3-2 decision to Fraser Valley Friday.

"I'm really pleased with tonight's effort," said Spartans coach Graham Roxburgh. "Obviously the early goals settled us down and got us into a rhythm. Krista had two great finishes and it was good to see her on the scoresheet. I thought Ali Oliverio was excellent in terms of her distribution and intelligence. We had great performances all the way through. I was really pleased for some of the subs who came on and obviously it was great to see Brooklyn get two goals and the way they were set up by Rachel (Hutchinson, Cloverdale, B.C.). Amy Gartke (Edmonton) was awesome tonight. I can't think of one player who didn't put in the performance that we wanted."

TWU will now prepare for a critical final weekend in which it will take on Victoria Oct. 23 and UBC Oct. 24, with the latter match setting up to be a battle for top spot in the Pacific Division.

Spartans goalie Ally Williamson (Langley) earned her sixth clean sheet of the season, but was untested as TWU had a 14-0 edge in shots on goal. TWU's Rachel Sydor came in for Williamson in the 70th minute and played the final 20 minutes. Manitoba's Chloe Werle and Madison Wilford split goaltending duties, making six and two saves, respectively.

The Spartans have now outscored their opposition 15-0 over their last three games.

"I think we're just passing with a little more confidence," Roxburgh said. "We're speeding up play and understanding each other a little bit more. Sometimes you just get into a groove where the passing and the movement is excellent and sometimes the ball goes in and sometimes it doesn't."

After Gommeringer's early brace, the TWU striker pushed for more in the 20th minute and, in doing so, helped earn a penalty kick. Gommeringer charged the right side of the field and took a shot towards the target was stopped by a handball, which resulted in the penalty kick. Oliverio converted the kick for her third penalty goal of the season.

Seina Kashima (Burnaby) saw a lot of ball possession throughout both halves, presenting great scoring opportunities for teammates as well as a half field charge that ended in a crossbar shot in the 35th minute. Late in the first half, Di Trocchio put TWU up 4-0 with a 41st-minute cross field shot for her fourth goal of the season.

Going into the second half with a four-goal lead, the Spartans were able to hold over the Bisons the rest of the way.

Tidder scored twice late, in the 82nd and 88th minutes, to round out the scoring.

Tonight was the last home game of the regular season for the Spartans, with the team celebrating Vanessa Kovacs (North Delta, B.C.), Sarah-Kim Bergeron (Calgary), Jolayne Whitmarsh (Langley) and Oliverio as graduating players.

Game Notes: Kovacs Whitmarsh both were shown yellow cards…TWU had an 11-0 advantage in corner kicks.
