Huskies Sweep Home-And-Home With Cougars

SASKATOON - A strong offensive performance saw the University of Saskatchewan Huskies defeat the University of Regina Cougars 4-0 Sunday afternoon in Saskatoon.

Saskatchewan got goals from Leesa Eggum, Rebebcca Weckworth and Rita Fetsch and benefited from a Regina own goal to sweep the home-and-home weekend series.

With the win Saskatchewan improves to 7-3 on the season. Regina drops to 1-7-2 with the loss.

In the 20th minute, Erica Hindmarsh sent a pass between two defenders to Eggum just outside the top of the box. From there, Eggum turned and sent a looping shot over Regina keeper Kacey McFee that deflected off the bottom of the cross bar before going into the net.

Just two minutes later, Saskatchewan would double its lead. Weckworth collected the ball from thirty yards out and sent another high shot up and over McFee who couldn't get enough of it to stop it from sailing into the net.

Just before halftime the Huskies took a 3-0 lead. After McFee knocked a shot in the box to the post a Cougar defender inadvertently deflected the ensuing rebound into the net.

Saskatchewan had the majority of the chances again in the second half. Hindmarsh got her second assist of the game in the 61st minute with a perfect through ball to Fetsch. The first-year Huskie drove in at the Cougar goal and sent a low shot in on McFee. The keeper got a piece of the shot, but the ball made it through to the bottom right corner of the net for the fourth goal.

McFee made eight saves in goal for the Cougars, while Kyleigh Vause recorded the clean sheet for the Huskies.

Regina hosts Alberta on Saturday and UNBC next Sunday, while the Huskies host UNBC and Alberta, Saturday and Sunday on Field 7.
