Griffins blow past Cougars in Calgary

Calgary AB- The MacEwan University Griffins stifled the Mount Royal University Cougars' attempt to secure their second win of the season on a gusty Thanksgiving Sunday at Cougars Stadium Field, winning by a score of 3-2.

The opening game their home and home yesterday ended in a 0-0 stalemate, but it didn't take long to break the scoreless streak on this occasion.

The Griffins opened the scoring in the 10th minute when Isabelle Dobbin came blistering up the left side with the ball and made a beautiful pass in front of the net to a sprinting Meigan Lemoine who buried her 4th of the year.

However the Cougars had a quick response just nine minutes later. After a chaotic scramble in front, Cougars forward Erin Holt found a way to sneak the ball past goaltender Emily Burns for her first goal of the season.

With the teams being forced to battle the worsening winds gusting at speeds up to 50km/h, the remainder of the half went by scoreless.

It appeared Mount Royal might have stolen the lead in the 52nd minute on a corner kick as the ball deflected off a number of bodies and into the Griffins goal. However, in the scramble Burns was interfered with and the goal was disallowed.

Instead it was MacEwan who grabbed hold of the lead in the 59th minute. With the ball just outside of the crease Cougar players had few good opportunities to clear the ball out of harms way, but Griffins forward Sheina Tracy fought hard in the box and ripped a clear shot past Cougars goalie Meghan Prudhomme.

Just minutes later in the 63rd minute Isabelle Dobbin beat a Cougars defender in a footrace towards the Cougars goal and found a way to get around Prudhomme to easily score MacEwan's third of the game, giving the Griffins a two-goal advantage.

However in the 78th minute the Cougars clawed back into the game. Erin Holt took a perfect corner kick that ended in front of the net and onto the foot of Emily Sands who made no mistake in putting the ball past Burns bringing her team within one.

That was as close as the Cougars would come as MacEwan played defensively strong the last 15 minutes of the contest- securing their fourth win of the year.

The 1-7-2 Cougar women will travel to Thompson River next Saturday while the 4-3-3 Griffins have a home contest against UBC Okanogan.
