WolfPack Women Rally To Tie UBCO In Soccer

Lots of dramatics as the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack women's soccer team managed to get four out of a possible six points against the University of British Columbia Okanagan Heat in Canada West play this weekend.

After shutting out UBCO on Friday night (Oct 9). The WolfPack needed a late marker by Danielle Fauteux (5th year, forward, Kamloops, BC)  in order to tie the Heat 1-1 at Hillside Stadium on Saturday (Oct 10)

Fauteux' goal in the 85 th minute off a pass from Brianna Powrie (5th year, midfield, Kamloops, BC) was her fourth goal of the year.

The tie gives TRU a record of 3-5-2 while the Heat fall to 1-5-4.

"Everyone was working hard and it was a team effort," said WolfPack head coach Tom McManus. "We were pressing their defense hard to get that shot."
The WolfPack were dominant for most of the second half. It was their strongest effort at home this season. " We started to push in the attacking third. We told the girls that we needed to take the shots in that area when we could.  We did get the shots away."

The Heat got their goal in the 19 th minute when the WolfPack looked a little tentative in their own end.  UBCO pressed and off a scramble and rebound, Courtney Hemmerling (2nd year, forward, Kelowna, BC) was able to beat Taylor Shantz (5th year, Kamloops, BC)>

"I was happy with the way we turned things around after last night (3-0 TRU win), "said UBCO head coach Claire Paterson. " We came out with a new game plan. For the most part, the girls were executing it.  There were some defensive lapses on our part which let TRU back into it. We are pretty banged up throughout the match and had to pull some kids off because of injuries.  They fought well. It is always a battle going up against TRU."

Paterson says it is always tough slugging against the WolfPack: "Always physical. It goes back to our college days. It is a big rivalry."

McManus felt a number of his players played well led by TRU Bookstore/McDonalds "Leader of the Pack" player of the match Kindra Maricle (3rd year, midfield, Kamloops, BC.).  "Jodi Hutton was phenomenal back there as well. With Sara Seebach (3rd year stopper, Kamloops, BC) being out, I had to move Kindra back to that position and both had great games.  They adjusted well."

"It feels good," McManus said about the win.  "We have a four point lead on UBCO still as far as the final playoff spot goes.  Hopefully in the final four games we can take them away."
TRU finishes out the season with home matches next weekend (Oct 17-18) against MacEwan and Mount Royal and the following weekend (Oct 24-25) when they host Alberta and UNBC.

THROW IN'S—Seebach suffered a broken arm in Friday's (Oct 9) win over UBCO in Kelowna, BC.  She was hit from behind while out of bounds and wound up flying against a chain link fence.
