Cougars strike early, but fall 3-1 to Saskatchewan

It took less than two minutes for the University of Regina's women's soccer team to find the back of the net, but Saskatchewan scored three times in a span of 17 minutes and coasted to a 3-1 win on Saturday afternoon at the U of R Field.

Jenelle Zapski scored twice for Saskatchewan (6-3-0) with Leesa Eggum notching the other for the Huskies, while Karlee Vorrieter replied for the Cougars with her first of the season.

Vorrieter's goal came in the 2nd minute. The fourth-year veteran got between a pass from the Huskies' back line intended for Kyleigh Vause and tried to chip it past the oncoming Saskatchewan keeper. Vause saved it, but the ball rebounded off Vorrieter and behind Vause, and all Vorrieter had to do was tap the ball into the wide-open net to score her third career goal.

Eggum tied the game for the Huskies in the 21st minute after settling a high clearance and sending a volley from about 17 yards out over the overstretched arms of Regina keeper Savannah Williams, scoring for the second consecutive match.

The Cougars had a pair of golden opportunities to retake the lead, first after Tove Werner's cross from the right to Celia Michaud in the middle of the field about 30 yards out. Michaud looked to have an open path to the goal, but had to slow up briefly to control the ball and was caught from behind by Saskatchewan defender Jennifer Miller before being able to chip it past the aggressive Vause. The second missed chance came minutes later after the Huskies were called for a hand ball inside the 18-yard box, but Vause made a save diving to her left to stop Vorrieter's effort.

And the Cougars would soon regret those missed chances when Zapski struck twice in the span of three minutes. Her first goal in the 35th minute came after a nice through ball from Kelly Cerkowniak, and in the 38th she gave the visitors some breathing room with a header to the right corner off a Carmen Gorlick cross from the right.

The U of R's best chance to draw to within one likely came in the 74th minute after Vause had difficulty handling a pass from her back line. Shayla Kapila had a couple chances to poke it by the Saskatchewan keeper and the ball eventually came to Nikita Senko on the 25-yard line, but her attempted volley with Vause off her line sailed high and left of the mark.

Still in the East Division playoff race as they remain tied with Mount Royal for the sixth and final postseason berth, the Cougars (1-6-2) will have another crack at their provincial rivals on Sunday in Saskatoon.
