Bisons Edge Wesmen 1-0 At  Duckworth Challenge

The University of Manitoba Bisons completed a two-match sweep against the University of Winnipeg Wesmen after posting a 1-0 victory Saturday night in the soccer portion of the 25th Annual Duckworth Challenge at the Winnipeg Soccer Complex.

Manitoba (6-2-2) won the series opener against the Wesmen (1-8-1) by a 2-0 margin Friday night at the Investors Group Field.

Fifth year midfielder Megan Graca scored the lone goal in the match in the 49th minute.

Winnipeg was the more aggressive and dominant team in the opening 25 minutes of the match, keeping play deep in Manitoba's end. The Bison's changed the pace of the opening half soon after putting in third year forward Alyssa Daley into the match which seemed to give Manitoba new energy and momentum.

Despite the evenly played first half both sides went into the halftime break tied at zero. Manitoba had five shots on goal in the opening half, Winnipeg managed two.

In the 49th minute the lone goal of the match was scored. Graca scored her second goal of the season on a pass in the goal area from Alanna Shaw and put a shot just past the reach of Wesmen goalkeeper Justina Jarmoszko.

Manitoba came close to scoring again soon after. In the 51st minute a header by Sara Schur was stopped by Jarmoszko to keep the Bisons lead to 1-0.

Winnipeg had a glorious chance to tie the match in the 89th minute. Daniel Bulloch was alone at the side of the net and got a quick shot off but Bisons goalkeeper Madison Wilford came up with the save of the match to preserve the 1-0 Manitoba victory.

The Duckworth Challenge Players of the Match were Maeghan Lindsay (Winnipeg) and Madison Wilford (Manitoba).

Manitoba and Winnipeg will both head to the West Coast next week to take on Trinity Western and Fraser Valley.
