Pandas beat 'Horns for weekend provincial sweep

EDMONTON - In their second-straight match against a provincial rival, the University of Alberta Pandas continued their success, taking a 3-0 win over the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns, Sunday afternoon at Foote Field.

Former Canada West MVP Julia Ignacio scored her second game-winner of the season before a Lethbridge own goal and a Maggie Zacsko insurance marker in the second half cemented the victory. Rookie netminder Cassie Bazzarelli made three saves for her second shutout of the season.

Third-year 'keeper Micaela Stone made seven saves in the loss for the Pronghorns, Alberta firing a total of 21 shots in her direction.

The Pandas put relentless pressure on Lethbridge in the earlygoing, earning multiple corners in the opening 10 minutes but it took until the 24th minute to find the back of the net.

After Pronghorn defender Kim Shellenberg fouled Alberta forward Jessie Candlish on a header attempt inside the 18-yard box, Ignacio took the resulting penalty kick and went bottom right for her second of the season and the opening goal.

The 2013 Canada West MVP tried to double the lead in the 39th minute, but her chip attempt over Stone was stymied by the Camrose, Alta. native, stretching her hands up to keep the deficit at one.

Unfortunately, luck was not on her side in the second half, a Fallon Dickie cross ricocheting off the head of Lethbridge defender Jesse Dueck in front and into the near corner to increase Alberta's lead to 2-0 in the 53rd minute.

The Pronghorns tried to respond in the final 20 minutes, headed by the energetic efforts of third-year midfielder Nikki Furukawa, but the best chance, coming at the 84th minute, led to freshman forward Lindsay Amatto deking out Bazzarelli at the corner of the penalty area, only to get swarmed by Panda defenders and unable to get a shot.

Alberta rounded out the scoring with a free kick just outside the Lethbridge 18-yard box in injury time, senior midfielder Annalise Schellenberg taking advantage of a misaligned Pronghorn defence, passing the ball to an open Zacsko, making no mistake for her first of the season.

The 3-4-1 Pandas remain at home on the upcoming Thanksgiving weekend to host the UNBC Timberwolves while 2-3-3 Lethbridge will host the second half of a home-and-home series with Calgary.
