Hutchinsons hat-trick lifts Spartans over Pandas

The Alberta Pandas soccer teams struggles continued on Sunday afternoon, as they were shutout 3-0 by the ninth ranked Trinity Western Spartans at Foote Field. The Pandas have now lost four consecutive matches, and have only scored once during that time, dropping their record to 1-4-1.

The Spartans took advantage of the brisk conditions, scoring all three of their goals with the wind at their back in the first half. Rookie midfielder Rachel Hutchinson recorded the hat-trick, her first three career CIS goals, while Ally Williamson stopped all eight shots she faced to earn the clean sheet.

The Spartans look sharp early, with Hutchinson getting them on the board in the 22nd minute, finishing the great cross in from Seina Kashima. Alberta, meanwhile, had trouble holding onto possession of the ball in the first half, and only managed two first half shots.

Hutchinson was back at it only eight minutes later. After Krista Grommeringer was denied by Panda keeper Cassie Bazzarelli on the initial chance, Hutchinson potted the rebound into a yawning Alberta net. Hutchinson completed the first half hat-trick in the 39th minute, Isabella Di Trocchio feed the ball through the Pandas defenders, and Hutchinson made no mistake to put the Spartans up 3-0. The 17 minute hat-trick was only seven minutes short of the Canada West record, set by Janine Frazao(10:08) for UBC in 2009.

The Pandas attack was stronger in the second half, firing six shots on net in the final 45, but none of which challenged Williamson, as she earned her third clean sheet of the season.

The loss drops Alberta into second last in the Western division of Canada West, while TWU(4-1-1) sits comfortably in third with 13 points through their first six matches. Alberta's offence will look to get back on track in their next match, as they host the 5-1 Calgary Dinos on October 2nd. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m. at Foote Field.
