Edmonton, AB….. The MacEwan University Griffins women's soccer team ended their Canada West (CW) home opener weekend with their first win of the 2015 season as they shut out the University of Winnipeg Wesmen, 2-0 at Jasper Place Bowl in Edmonton. The Griffins' regular season record is now 1-2-1 and the Wesmen's record is 2-4. Next weekend MacEwan University will take on the University of Regina Cougars and University of Saskatchewan Huskies on the road, while the Wesmen host the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns and the University of Calgary Dinos.

Expectations were high for both teams after yesterday's results as the Griffins tied the University of Manitoba Bisons 2-2, while the Wesmen defeated the Mount Royal Cougars 1-0.

The Wesmen were tested defensively as MacEwan put the pressure on from the start. In the 18th minute, fifth-year forward Sheena Tracey (Edmonton, AB) fed a pass to rookie Griffins forward Isabelle Dobbin (Devon, AB). Dobbin beat first-year Wesmen keeper Jarmina Jarmoszko (Winnipeg, MB) lower left with her third CW season goal, to give MacEwan University a 1-0 lead.

In the 49th minute, Griffins fifth year forward Jennifer Lam (Edmonton, AB) sent a corner kick towards fifth-year defender Marlea Moroz (Prince George, BC). Moroz's header went to the top right corner, out of Jarmoszko's reach. This was Moroz's first CW season goal and the final one of the match. MacEwan University earned their first 2015 season win 2-0, while first-year Griffins keeper Emily Burns (Sherwood Park, AB) earned her first CW career shut-out.
