Pronghorns battle Cougars to scoreless draw

Lethbridge – Battling each other and blustery conditions, the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns and University of Regina Cougars fought to a scoreless draw.

The tie moves the 'Horns record to 2-1-1 on the season, while the tie is the Cougars first points of the season and their record now stands a 0-3-1.

While the Cougars carried the play in a scoreless opening half, the visitors settled for long range shots. In the half, the Cougars had 9 shot attempts with three finding the mark, but 'Horns keeper Micaela Stone had a relatively easy time turning away majority of the Cougar shots. The 'Horns only managed three shots in the half.

The 'Horns best chance came in the 15th minute, Nikki Furukawa crossed the ball dangerously into the Cougars penalty area, striker Meaghan Welby got her head on it, deflecting the ball to far post and Kelsy Graham had a chance but found a Cougar defender.

The Cougars best chance came off the foot of Sienne Krynowsky, whose long range crack hit the crossbar late in the half.

Early in the second off a short corner, the Cougars nearly broke the stalemate, Brinna Wright took a pass back high but her shot rung off the crossbar.

With 30 minutes remaining the teams traded dangerous looking chances. 'Horns midfielder Alycia Amatto crossed the ball deep into the Cougars' penalty area and her cross deflected off a Cougar defender, but right to Cougars keeper Savannah Williams.

At the other end of the field, the Cougars hit their third crossbar of the game. Wright took a turnover from 30 yards and unleashed a rocket of a shot but 'Horns keeper Stone got a piece of it and pushed it off the crossbar.

The Cougars continued to push the pace but 'Horns defense would bend but not break. Wright had another good look in the 76th minute from a set piece from 30 yards out but Stone was equal to the task, diving to her left to make the save.

Full time stats heavily favored the Cougars, Regina finished the game with 22 shot attempts and nine shots on goal, while the 'Horns only attempted four shots on the day.

The 'Horns head out on the road next weekend for the first time, traveling to Winnipeg to face the Wesmen and Manitoba Bisons. The Cougars will return home and host the MacEwan Griffins and Mount Royal Cougars.
