Cougars earn 4-1 win over Pronghorns

Lethbridge – The Mount Royal Cougars scored twice in the each half to earn their first win of the season by a score of 4-1 over the Lethbridge Pronghorns.

Today's result moves both the 'Horns and Cougars to 1-1-0 after the first weekend of conference action.

After a slow start to the half, the Cougars pounced with two goals in less than a minute. The first goal was off a set piece from 28 yards out. Amanda Shafer's shot curled over the 'Horns wall and past the outstretched arms of 'Horns keeper Micaela Stone.

Off the restart, Kelsey Kinzer pressured a Pronghorn defender off the ball, laying into space to Navroop Virk, who made no mistake picking the low left corner.

In a half controlled by the Cougars, Mount Royal registered five shots on goal in the half, while the 'Horns only directed two at the Cougar net.

In the second half, the Pronghorns came out with some urgency and put the Cougars on their heels. They were finally rewarded in the 57th minute. From a free kick just outside the box, Furukawa place her shot just over the hands of Cougar keeper, cutting the Cougars lead in half.

It didn't take long for the Cougars to regain their two-goal cushion. In the 63rd minute, Shafer took advantage of a failed clearing attempt by the 'Horns and volleyed the ball from 10 yards out into bottom left corner.

Kaitlin Doiron nearly cut the lead back to only one in the 75th minute but her bicycle kick attempt went just wide.

Still putting the pressure on the Cougars, Alyica Amatto had a great chance in close but Brianna Keil slid in front of her to block the attempt.

The Cougars salted the game away in the 80th minute. 'Horns keeper Stone stopped the initial free kick but Kinzer jumped on the loose ball and buried her second of the season.

The 'Horns will remain home next weekend, hosting the Saskatchewan Huskies and Regina Cougars, while Mount Royal will play host to the Winnipeg Wesmen and Manitoba Bisons.
