Bison women's soccer get commanding first win, 4-0 over Thompson Rivers

WINNIPEG – With stormy conditions outside, the Manitoba Bison women's soccer team took their Friday, September 4 home opener indoors. They looked no worse for wear at the University of Manitoba Soccer Complex either, as second year forward Bruna Mavignier paced them to a 4-0 win over the Thompson Rivers WolfPack.

Mavignier assisted on the game-winning Selina Speranza goal, then scored two of her own – all in the first half. Her three points propelled the Bisons, who start their season 1-0. Thompson Rivers are 0-1.

"I think it was an amazing start to the season, a 4-0 win is fantastic, we wanted to score goals and keep a clean sheet and we did it," said Bisons head coach Vanessa Martinez Lagunas.

"So, I'm really proud of the team. I think we combined really well, we played really attractive soccer and I'm proud but we'll be concentrating right away for the next game."

With no competition from Mother Nature, both teams got off to hot starts, with the ball moving quickly end to end. Manitoba got the first two chances, albeit from distance, as Megan Graca and Amanda Wong both narrowly missed shots from outside the box.

Speranza's opening goal came at the 18-minute mark, as Mavignier got just enough space in the middle to find Speranza on the right with a beautiful touch pass. One move later, Speranza was past goalkeeper Taylor Shantz, and had her first goal of the season. After that, Mavignier really started to put on a show.

At the 43-minute mark, she got a good first touch on a break-in, putting in a low shot from just right of the net to give the Bisons an insurance goal. Just four minutes later, in extra time, she headed in a savvy give-and-take from Megan Graca for her second goal and third point of the half.

A quiet second half followed as the Bisons got some of their younger faces into the game. One of those was first year Sara Schur, who scored her first CIS goal at the 81-minute mark, cleaning up a Speranza shot to score. A pair of wide shots from WolfPack midfielder Taylor Miller was as close as the visiting squad would get, as Manitoba walked away without taking many blows.

The Bison women's soccer team conclude their opening weekend tomorrow afternoon against the UBC Okanagan Heat. Kick off outside at the University of Manitoba Turf Fields is 4 p.m. CST. Thompson Rivers will head across town to play the University of Winnipeg Wesmen, the game time also at 4 p.m.
