WSOC: Griffins take out Timberwolves in exhibition play

PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. – The MacEwan University Griffins did all their damage in a seven-minute span in the second half to defeat the UNBC women's soccer Timberwolves 3-0 in Canada West exhibition play.

The result means the Timberwolves lost both exhibition matches this weekend after falling 2-1 to Thompson Rivers University on Friday, while the Griffins won both of their matches.

Both teams played a structured game in the first half, with neither side making many mistakes to allow chances to go the other way, and the game remained scoreless through 45 minutes.

The best chance of the first half came in the 30th minute, as Griffins forward Jazmyne Mauthe (Edmonton, Alta.) found some open space inside the 18-yard box. Her shot beat Timberwolves keeper Jordan Hall (Prince George, B.C.), but the post kept it out.

UNBC couldn't get much going offensively, as Sydney Hall's (Prince George, B.C.) shot in the seventh minute was the only one for the Timberwolves in the opening 45 minutes.

However, MacEwan found its flow early in the second half and broke the game open. Sarah Riddle (Edmonton, Alta.) opened the scoring in the 61st minute, capitalizing on a UNBC turnover just outside the 18-yard box. Riddle made no mistake, finding the open net to give the Griffins a 1-0 lead.

The Griffins added to the lead just three minutes later, as Kayla Evans (Edmonton, Alta.) connected on a header off a corner kick from Griffins captain Jennifer Lam (Edmonton, Alta.) to make it 2-0.

Bianca Olivieri (Edmonton, Alta.) rounded out the scoring in the 68th minute, also connecting on a header following a cross from Mauthe.

UNBC starts its regular season in Prince George on Friday, September 11 at 7 p.m., when they welcome the UBC-Okanagan Heat to the North Cariboo Senior Soccer League Field, followed by a match with Thompson Rivers on Sunday, September 13, at noon.
