Pandas & 'Horns get naught in the rain

EDMONTON – Despite directing more than 20 shots on goal, the No.3 University of Alberta Pandas weren't celebrating with piña coladas on a rainy Sunday afternoon at Foote Field, finishing a 0-0 draw against the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns, the Pandas going scoreless on the season-opening weekend.

Sophomore netminder Myriah Marino made nine saves in a shutout performance for the Pronghorns, stealing a point from the defending Canada West champions.

Senior goaltender Kelti Biggs improved her career total to 26.5 shutouts in 54 games.

Alberta began their offensive pressure early, firing three shots on net in the opening 10 minutes of the game, the closest call coming in the fifth minute when fourth-year midfielder Maggie Zacsko vaulted a 40-yard shot on net that Marino baubled before hitting the crossbar.

The Pandas continued to keep the ball in the Lethbridge half of the pitch, but the diligent Pronghorn defence kept Alberta to the perimeter and cleared crosses to eliminate any offensive threats in the 18-yard box.

As the rain intensified in the second half, so did the Pandas' efforts to make the first strike, only to be met by defenders blocking shots and Marino holding her own in the Lethbridge goal.

The Coaldale, Alta. native leads the conference with 17 saves in two games so far this season, adding a 1.50 goals against average and .850 save percentage.

Heading out on the road next weekend, the Pandas will play against the Regina Cougars on Saturday and follow up with a match against the Saskatchewan Huskies on Sunday. The Pronghorns head south to host the Calgary Dinos on Thursday and Canada West newcomer, the Grant MacEwan Griffins, on Saturday.
