HUSKIES SECURE PLAYOFF SPOT WITH WIN OVER PROVINCIAL RIVAL

The University of Saskatchewan Huskies clinched a Canada West playoff spot with a 3-0 win over the visiting University of Regina Cougars Saturday afternoon on Field 7 in Saskatoon's PotashCorp Park.

Entering the two-match weekend series, the Cougars sat just one point behind the Huskies in the standings.  Both teams needed wins to secure a spot in the post season.

With the win, the Huskies improve to 6-2-3 and can finish no lower than fourth in the women's soccer prairie division. Regina drops to 5-4-2 and will finish no higher than fifth place, just one spot short of the playoffs.

Saskatchewan's Carmen Gorlick opened the scoring in the 29th minute on a scramble in front of the net on a corner kick taken by Erica Hindmarsh. With a ball loose just in front of the goal, Gorlick was able to get a foot on it to kick it by Regina keeper Kacey McFee.

Jenelle Zapski scored her league-leading 11th goal of the season on a penalty kick in the 57th minute to give the Huskies the 2-0 lead. Zapski was hauled down in the box by the Cougars.

In the 90th minute, the Huskies added an insurance goal when Erica Hindmarsh was able to dribble through the middle and land a shot past McFee from 25-yards out.

McFee made six saves for the Cougars, while Cara Santaga made two for Saskatchewan.

The two teams will battle again Sunday in the final regular season match of the 2014 Canada West women's soccer season. Kick off is slated for 12 p.m. on Field 7 in PotashCorp Park.
