'Horns-Bisons battle elements and each other to scoreless draw

Lethbridge – In the second to last conference game of the season, the Lethbridge Pronghorns and Manitoba Bisons battled each other and harsh winds to a scoreless draw.

With the tie, the 'Horns record moves to 1-7-3, while the Bisons are 4-4-3. The tie and a University of Saskatchewan Huskies win eliminates the Bisons from post season contention.

With the wind gusting into the 50 kilometre an hour range a premium was placed on short precision passing but for the majority of the opening 45 minutes neither team could break the opposition down and net the games first goal.

The 'Horns had the first quality chance but Kayla Blacquiere's free kick from just outside the penalty area was easily stopped by Bison keeper Martie Arran.

Not to be outdone, 'Horns keeper Myriah Marino made a trio of quality stops in the opening half. Off a nice cross deep into the box, Marino came off her line and challenged Amanda Wong, making a stellar diving stop.

In the 36th minute off a Bison free kick, Marino deflected a dangerous looking shot from Sarah Haiko out of harms way and in extra time she stopped a point blank shot from Bruna Mavignier.

The second half saw much of the same with the wind, which was gusting heavily at times, dictating the erratic pace of the game and slowed the offensive attack for both teams.

With less than 10 minutes to play Mavignier broke free from her mark and pulled the ball around Marino but defender Kim Shellenberg raced back and thwarted Mavignier's chance.

In the end the teams had to settle for a scoreless draw.

The Bisons held an 11-2 shot attempt advantage but could only find the mark three times, while the 'Horns only tested Arran the one time.

The 'Horns and Bisons will clash again tomorrow afternoon in each team's season finale. Kick-off is scheduled for 12:00pm at the University Community Sports Stadium.
