Cougars top Griffins 2-1, shift focus to Huskies

REGINA, Sask. - The University of Regina women's soccer team gave the MacEwan University Griffins just their second loss of the season with a 2-1 win in Regina on Sunday.

A Daniela Castro penalty kick turned out to be the winning goal for the Cougars, who move to 5-3-2 with the win.
The win keeps the Cougars alive in the Prairie Division playoff race, as they head to Saskatoon next weekend for a pair of critical games against the Huskies.

The Cougars and Huskies will battle for the division's final playoff spot, as the Huskies head into the final weekend of the regular season with a 5-2-3 record and sit one point above the Cougars.

The winning goal came in the 77th minute, after Brianna Wright was tackled in the box. Castro opted to go to the right side of the net on the penalty, and Rebecca Reif guessed wrong in net for MacEwan. The marker was Castro's first-career goal with the Cougars.

Celia Michaud (pictured) was the other goal scorer for Regina, netting her first of the season off a feed from Wright in the 48th minute.

Jazmyne Mauthe replied for the Griffins in the 64th, beating Kacey McFee on a low shot after Sheena Tracey collected a rebound and slipped a pass in front of the net.

McFee was stellar in net for Regina, making six saves on seven shots.
Reif made one save on three shots. The two goals that she allowed were the first of the season to beat her.

The match marked the final home game for fifth-year seniors Molly Glass, Jayde McFee and Melanie King.

Regina will travel to Saskatoon to take on the Huskies for games on both Saturday and Sunday.
