Wesmen Knock Off Pronghorns For First Win Of The Season

The University of Winnipeg Wesmen Women's Soccer team picked up thei first victory of the 2014 Canada West regular season with a hard fought 2-1 victory over the Lethbridge Pronghorns on a sunny, warm September evening in Winnipeg.

Winnipeg now sits with a record of 1-4-0, while the Pronghorns fall to 1-5-2.

Danielle Bulloch (13th minute) and Kayla Jacobsen (41st minute) scored for the Wesmen. Stephanie Groten (36th minute) tallied for the Pronghorns.

The opening 10 minutes of the contest was a constant battle for field position with no quality scoring chanves coming from either side.

The Wesmen changed that in the 13th minute. Danielle Bulloch scored her third goal of the season taking a corner kick pass from Chelseaa Kwasnicki to give the Wesmen a 1-0 lead.

Lethbridge hit the scoreboard in the 36th minute as Stephanie Groten chipped in a pass from Kelsey Graham to tie the game at 1-1 late in the opening half.

Winnipeg was not done in the opening half. Kayla Jacobsen scored her first goal of the season taking a pass in the slot from Kwasnicki and beat Pronghorns goalkeeper Myriah Marino to make the score 2-1 in Winnipeg's favour.

There was no scoring in the 45 plus minutes in the second half as Winnipeg held on for their first victory of the 2014 regular season.

Wesmen goalkeeper Taylor Thorkelsson made six saves. Marino stopped four in the Pronghorns net.

The two teams will wrap up their weekend series on Saturday night. Match time at the Winnipeg Soccer Complex is 6:00 p.m.
