Prince George, BC - Nationally ranked University of Victoria Vikes were led by stand-out Jaclyn Sawicki in their 5-0 win over the UNBC Timberwolves Saturday afternoon. Sawicki raked in two goals and two assists in the first of two as the no.9 Vikes advance to 4-0-1 and the Timberwolves fall to 0-5-2.

After an unexpected delay in the start of the game both teams appeared unshaken. Starting out strong, the Timberwolves opened on the attack with a long ball from the midfield to winger Madison Emmond (Prince George, BC). Emmond tried to hit striker Sydney Hall (Prince George, BC) on a cross but was unsuccessful. The Vikes first goal came off a give-and-go between Sarah Douglas (London, ON) and Emma Greig (Tofino, BC). A quick pass to Douglas freed Greig up to split the defence, Douglas played the ball through for Greig who was then able to find the back of the net in the sixth minute.

Working to regain ground midfielder Tianna Pius (Prince George, BC) played a cross ball to Emmond in front of the net but it was kicked away by Vikes defender Lindsay Machin (Richmond, BC). UVic continued to push the pace, knocking long balls up front and playing back to the midfield, which paid off in the 31st minute when midfielder Jaclyn Sawicki (Coquitlam, BC) received a ball from Greig and knocked it past the Timberwolves keeper from the penalty area. Going into the break the Timberwolves found themselves down 2-0.

The Vikes continued to push the pace in the second half, forcing UNBC to play on their heels. Within the first two minutes Sawicki found herself in a scoring position but was denied by UNBC keeper Jordan Hall (Prince George, BC). Hall blocked the shot but Vikes midfielder Natasha Magnus (Richmond, BC) was in the box and perfect position to put the ball back into the net. Three minutes later Sawicki set up another scoring opportunity when she knocked a through ball to Greig. Greig was able to beat her defender and notch her second goal of the game in the 50th minute of play.

The Timberwolves continued to press, trying to gain ground and move out of their half, but the battle for second ball was won by the Vikes, giving them the opportunity to push back into the Timberwolves end. The final Vikes goal came in the 61st minute. fifth year midfield Mallory Hackett (Victoria, BC) played the ball lateral to Sawicki who was positioned just outside the box. The fifth year midfielder used footwork to get around the defender and send the ball soaring over top of the UNBC keeper's fingers just under the crossbar.

Both teams return to the North Cariboo Senior Soccer League Fields Sunday, September 28, 2014 for their second of two. The game is set to kickoff at 12 p.m. and can be viewed live at canadawest.tv
