Griffins and Huskies play to draw

In ninety minutes of intense and even play, the MacEwan University Griffins and Saskatchewan Huskies ended where they began, in a well-played draw.

The Griffins started the game defensive and offensively motivated, controlling the first fifteen minutes of the game.

Marlea Moroz earned their first quality attempt for the Griffins at the 15:30 mark with a low strike that drifted wide left of the outstretched keeper, Cara Santaga.

The Huskies would register their first of four shots in the half when Erica Hindmarsh drifted the shot towards Griffins keeper Rebecca Reif.

Although the Griffins first half attempts appeared to be more dangerous than their counterpart's, teams would end the first half tied with shots on net ending evenly with four each.

In the second half, both teams stepped up the already quick tempo.

In the 52nd minute the Huskies finally sprung Erica Hindmarsh free. She was nearly clear of the Griffins defenses, but Kayla Evans responded to the task for the Griffins clearing the ball from near the goal line.

The Griffins had their own chance two on one in the 81st minute when Casey Paplawski and Nicole Palladino were nearly home free, but called on the close offside.

It would take to the 90th minute when both teams would finish the game in a flurry of chances, but none would find translate on to the scoreboard.

For their efforts, Megan Manson (SASK) and Erika Vecchio (GMU) were named the Players of the game.

Teams will hope for warmer weather tomorrow for their rematch, as the Huskies and Griffins are schedule to play their first game of the double header scheduled for 12:00 p.m. at JP Bowl in Edmonton.
