Regina rolls past Mount Royal with 6-1 victory

The University of Regina Cougars women's soccer team set school history on Sunday, defeating the Mount Royal University Cougars 6-1.
The six goals that Regina scored were the most in school history, passing a mark of five set against Winnipeg in 2012.

Kayla McDonald led the way for the Cougars with a pair of goals in the first half. Karlee Vorrieter and rookie Nikita Senko each had a goal and an assist for Regina, and defender Racquel Marshall had a pair of assists.

The onslaught began in the eighth minute, when Veronica Boesch crossed in a corner kick. Marshall tipped the ball to McDonald and she beat Mount Royal keeper Janelle Chicilo with a high shot.
Less than five minutes later, Senko was led in on a partial breakaway and sent a low shot at the net. Chicilo made a diving stop but a long rebound bounced right to Boesch, who slid her second goal of the season into the open net.

In the 23rd minute, Regina captain Molly Glass (pictured) took a loose ball and hammered a remarkable shot from 40 yards out into the top right corner of the net to make the Cougars lead 3-0.

McDonald scored her second of the game in the 25th minute on a nice passing play with Boesch and Vorrieter that led to a low shot on net. Chicilo got a piece of the strike, but the ball still trickled into the net.

Chicilo made three of her six first-half saves following McDonald's second goal to prevent the lead from growing any larger.

Regina led 4-0 at the half and managed to carry their strong offensive play in the second half, scoring another goal in the 51st minute.
Marshall crossed in a long pass off a free kick, and Mount Royal's backup goalie Maria Tait misplayed the ball. Senko was right there to head the ball into the open net for her first goal as a member of the Cougars.

Regina's record-setting goal came in the 76th minute, when Vorrieter took a feed from Garnet Van Dyck after a corner kick and put a strong shot past Tait.

Mount Royal's lone goal was scored in the 65th minute as Kelsey Kinzner put a well-placed strike past Regina goalkeeper Kacey McFee's diving effort.

Regina's defence, led by Glass, Marshall and Rachel Taylor, held Mount Royal to only two shots on net in the contest.
Vorrieter, Glass and Marshall were the only Cougars to play all 90 minutes.

Regina keeper Ashton Lowry saw some action in the second half as she spelled off McFee, but didn't face any shots on net from Mount Royal.

The Cougars move to 2-2-0 on the season with the win. Mount Royal falls to 1-2-1.
Regina is to hit the road for next week's action, as they visit the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns (0-3-1) for a pair of games.
