Dinos spoil 'Horns home opener

Lethbridge – Powered by two first half goals, the Calgary Dinos spoiled the Lethbridge Pronghorn women's soccer home opener and continued their undefeated start to the 2014 Canada West season, with a 2-0 win.

With the win, the Dinos, who have opened with three consecutive road games, improve to 2-0-1. The 'Horns continue to look for their first win of the season and drop to 0-2-1.

Dominica Wronski and Lauren Vernon each scored for the Dinos, while Samantha Chang-Foidl made three saves in the win and has yet to yield a goal in the first three games.

Myriah Marino started her third consecutive game in the 'Horns net and made four saves in a losing cause.

Before the game was eight minutes old, Wronski would strike from a free kick just outside the box on the far side of the field, curling the ball past the 'Horns wall to beat Marino to the near post.

Despite being down a goal early, the 'Horns did have chances of their own but could not find the finish they needed. Meaghan Welby curled a cross into the box but Chang-Foidl was able to deflect the cross from harm's way.

Off a 'Horns long free kick Welby looked dangerous again but her header from the far side of the penalty area was directed straight into the waiting hands of Chang-Foidl.

Following two near misses by the Dinos, Vernon doubled the Dinos lead, collecting a loose ball just outside the penalty area and floating a shot over the outstretched arms of Marino.

While the 'Horns displayed a more concerted effort in the second half, limiting the Dinos offensive chances, they were not able to finish any of their own chances to put a dent into the Dinos lead.

A goal mouth scramble off of a 'Horns lone corner kick led to a couple of nervous moments for the Dinos but none of the 'Horns attackers could get a clean look at the net.

The 'Horns will welcome the conference's newest member to the league Saturday afternoon, hosting the MacEwan Griffins for their first ever Canada West game. Kick-off is set for 12:00pm at the University Community Stadium. The Dinos will face the same Griffins, Sunday afternoon in Calgary.
