VICTORIA – Canada West MVP senior forward Julia Ignacio scored the game-winning goal five minutes into extra time, as the Alberta Pandas won their eighth Canada West women's soccer banner 2-1 over the defending CIS and Canada West champion Trinity Western Spartans on Saturday night.

The win marks Alberta's first Canada West title since 2001. They now set their sights on a CIS banner, looking for their fourth in school history, beginning Thursday in Toronto. The defending national champion Spartans will also attend the CIS tournament as the Canada West runner-up.

In the 95th minute at Centennial Stadium, Ignacio headed the ball into the net converting a great cross from two yards out by Paula Dadensky, banking it off the cross bar past Spartans goalkeeper Rachel Bedek, who was helpless on the play.

The Pandas will be the higher seeded Canada West squad for nationals as conference champions.

In time added on in the second half, Biggs came out to slide and knock the ball away on a dangerous Trinity Western scoring chance from fifth-year senior midfielder Natalie Boyd of Surrey, B.C., extending the game to extra time.

After Ignacio's goal five minutes into the first extra-time half, the Spartans desperately tried to tie the match. In the final three minutes of extra time, Caitlin Haines was robbed by Biggs, and the Spartans pressured the Pandas throughout the final minutes but could not equalize.

VICTORIA – Graduating senior goalkeeper Tanya Jones delivered in net to bring home the bronze for her UVic Vikes who defeated the UBC Thunderbirds with a 3-1 edge on penalty kicks in the Canada West women's soccer championship final.

In her last university career game, Jones made two huge saves in penalty kicks to secure the bronze medal for her team on a soggy and windy Saturday night in Victoria. Flawless in regulation time, Jones allowed just one goal in the penalty kicks.

With the game scoreless at the end of regulation time, both teams prepared their senior players for penalty kicks (in the Canada West bronze medal match, teams do not play extra time).

The Vikes would come out with the win in penalties after Jones shutout UBC senior Frazao and freshman Aman Shergill.

VICTORIA - Jessie Candlish converted a crisp pass from Canada West MVP Julia Ignacio in the 18-yard-box, scoring the game-winning goal just seven minutes into overtime to lift the Alberta Pandas to a 2-1 win over the UBC Thunderbirds at Centennial Stadium in the first of two Canada West semifinals.

Alberta will play the winner of the second semifinal between Victoria and Trinity Western (scoreless at the half) in the Canada West championships on Saturday at 7:15 p.m.

Candlish (Edmonton) was wide open after Ignacio deked her way past two Thunderbirds defenders, then slid the ball five yards for the easy conversion.

Shalla Kadima (Edmonton) also scored for the Pandas, late in the 42nd minute, before UBC's Taryn Lim (Richmond, B.C.) tied it on a pass from Shayla Chorney (Vancouver) in the 82nd minute.

With the win, Alberta clinches a spot in the CIS nationals beginning Thursday at the University of Toronto.

Junior netminder Kelti Biggs (Spruce Grove, Alta.) made six saves and said her team rallied after letting up a late goal in regulation time.

VICTORIA – Trinity Western Spartans fifth-year senior Caitlin Haines scored in the final half of extra time, lifting her squad to a come-from-behind 2-1 win over the UVic Vikes on Friday night at Centennial Stadium in the second of two Canada West women's soccer semifinals.

With the win, the Spartans qualify for the CIS Nationals in Toronto beginning on Thursday. They will face Alberta in the Canada West championship game on Saturday night, a game that will be important for CIS national seeding, while UVic meets UBC for the bronze.

The Spartans tied it up in the 85th minute when senior defender Jennifer Castillo (Surrey, B.C.) cracked a shot from outside the 18-yard box, leaving Vikes keeper Tanya Jones (North Saanich, B.C.) without hope of a save.

The winning goal for the Spartans came in the 109th minute when Haines (New Westminster, B.C.) capitalized on a slip from the Vikes keeper at the top of the six. The fifth-year education student entered the game in the 67th minute, bringing home the win with her first goal of the post-season.

Trinity Western will play Alberta in the Canada West championships on Saturday at 7:15 p.m. UVic will faceoff against rivals UBC in the bronze-medal game at 5:00 p.m. the same day.
